Asakusa is the traditional downtown area of Tokyo and home to many internationally-known sightseeing places: You can see "The Golden Poo" - a giant golden statue perched on top of Asahi Beer Hall. It looks comically like a shining dollop of poop, hence the nickname. It is believed that a golden poo brings luck in Japan. You can see Senso-ji Temple as well. It is one of Tokyo's most historical temples and is an absolute must-see. Look out for the impressive Kaminarimon Gate that marks the entrance-way to the temple, and weave your way down the stall-lined Nakamise-dori shopping street (a great place to get rice crackers and all sorts of souvenirs) to the Hözömon Gate and the main hall. I visited the Sensō-ji Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple. It is Tokyo's oldest temple (founded in 645 CE) and has a titanium-tiled roof. Though the temple was associated with the Tendai sect of Buddhism, it became independent after the Second World War. The temple is dedicated to Guanyin, the bodhisattva (a person on the path towards Buddhahood) of compassion. At the beginning of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensō-ji as the protector of the Tokugawa clan. During World War II, the temple was bombed and destroyed during the March 10th air raid (a devastating and catastrophic firebomb air raid) on Tokyo. The temple was reconstructed and served as a symbol of rebirth and peace to the Japanese people. In the courtyard, a tree was hit by a bomb in the air raids; however, it has regrowned in the husk of the old tree and is a similar symbol to the temple itself. Adjacent to the temple, I saw the five-story pagoda, the Asakusa Shinto shrine, and shops with traditional Japanese goods.
