We set out at eight in the morning and began our hike along the rugged mountain road. This road is not easy to walk on and you need to be especially careful with your steps, but every time you walk a certain distance, you can see different magnificent scenery. As the journey progressed, we kept stopping to admire the changing scenery around us. As we approached the top of the mountain, the sight was even more stunning. The last section of the road was a staircase. Everyone had to climb these 250 steps slowly. Although it was tiring, for the sake of the magnificent scenery before them, everyone ignored the fatigue and moved forward firmly. Finally, when we reached the top of the mountain, we saw an incredibly spectacular sight - the crater and the sulfur smoke that continued to rise. The view of this active volcano is stunning, and the surrounding natural scenery is breathtaking. Looking down from the top of the mountain, the environment in front of me is picturesque. All the hard work disappears in an instant, and only awe of nature remains in my heart. There were no fences around it and it was very dangerous. I only watched for five minutes and then left. Apart from its beauty, Mount Semeru also has a quite unique history. It is said that the gods moved Mount Semeru from India to balance the island of Java, which at that time was oscillating in the Ocean. At first, Mount Semeru was shifted to the western part of Java Island. But because it looked unbalanced, the gods decided to move it again to the eastern part of Java Island. On the way, some parts of Mount Semeru scattered and formed small mountains that stretched from west to east. After successfully moving to the east, the problem has not ended with the island of Java still looking tilted. The gods then decided to cut off part of the mountain, then placed it in the northwestern part with the name Mount Penanggungan. when you have plan to traveling around probolinggo, you must visit aworjiwa cafe. its located in sukapura. 3 KM before top of the bromo mountain. many menu of food and drink are ready to serve in here. it have clean and fresh air.

The hike down and up the crater will take somewhere around 45-60 minutes but that will also depend on how crowded the path is. Since it will be in the dark and the path is rocky/uneven, you will also want to take it slower than usual. As you are making your way down to the bottom you may pass by some sulfur miners until you reach a viewpoint where you can better see the blue flames. Unfortunately, the blue flames will not always be nice and bright to see (and sometimes you won’t be able to see them at all). When I visited, they were not strong at all and I couldn’t even get a picture in the dark. After enjoying sunrise for a bit, feel free to walk a bit more around the crater rim of Ijen. You can continue counter clockwise as you take in additional views of the lake and crater rim. #nationalpark#urbanexplorer

Kawah Ijen also known as the Ijen Volcano or Gunung Ijen, is a dormant volcano at the very end of the island of Java in Indonesia. What makes it super unique though is that it houses the largest crater acidic lake in the world! Seeing this turquoise colored crater lake at sunrise will be one beautiful site to take in. It also is known for its vast amount of sulphur that gets mined every day. As you make your way closer to the crater, you will begin to see the extremely hard working miners that dig up the sulphur and bring it up from the bottom of the crater and then all the way up to the rim and back down to the starting point. Not only is it extremely dangerous for these miners to be working in hazardous conditions, but they also make a very minimal wage – around $10 per day. Once across the Sea of Sand, you will be welcomed to a nice incline and 250 or so steps up the side of Bromo and towards the crater rim. As you make your way up, you will be welcomed to some incredible mountain landscapes surrounding you. Soon enough you will reach the top of Mount Bromo and its perpetual plume of smoke coming from its crater. What is really unique about Bromo, is that you can actually walk around a good portion of the crater rim. Definitely be careful though as it can get a bit tricky at times. If you do want to walk some of the rim, I would recommend heading up to your left and walking for 10-15 minutes before turning back around. #nationalpark#urbanexplorer

Next up on the Bromo itinerary is the Sea of Sand. I decided to take the hike down into the crater and across the Sea of Sand. Others choose to hop in a jeep or take a motorbike across. From Cemoro Lawang, the journey down and across on foot should take about 45 minutes to the base of Mount Bromo. Note that once you begin to head down into the Sea of Sand you will be entering the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, which is subject to an entrance fee (217,500 IDR / $15 USD weekdays and 317,500 IDR / $23 USD weekends). The Sea of Sand though is exactly what you would expect. It is just a massive sanded area between Cemoro Lawang and the volcanoes out in the distance. You will see plenty of motorbikes and jeeps heading through dusting up the sand in every which direction. A day visiting the Mount Bromo area is not just a hike up Bromo itself. There is much more to a day than just the crater. You have the chance to hike up to some sunrise viewpoints overlooking the National Park, walk through (or bike/jeep through) the Sea of Sand, and climb to the edge of the Mount Bromo crater. There are two main places you can choose to stay in if visiting Mount Bromo – Cemoro Lawang and Probolinggo. Cemoro Lawang is located just at the edge of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. From the town you are able to visit everything in the area on your own without the need for additional transport. My recommendation would be to stay within Cemoro Lawang itself due to the convenience factor and proximity to all the Bromo activities. What makes a Bromo experience so special is the ability to see that vast Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park landscape for sunrise and then truly be able to experience the crater itself. As we descend into the open of Widodaren and challenge ourselves with the gradient trail of Mount Bromo the sun shines above us and we were awe by the beauty that surrounds us. The route up & down Mount Bromo wasn't difficult however the surrounding makes it challenging as we have horses galloping slowly up & down hill guided to transport those whom find walking up the trail physically challenging. Dust from the ground rises as the horses gallops by making it a little bit uncomfortable to breath. But we made it. King Kong Hill: this is where you can hike up to (or drive to), to enjoy the one of a kind sunrise over Mount Bromo and the surrounding volcanoes. Here is where I spent the majority of sunrise along with several other visitors. While it was a bit crowded, there was still plenty of room to take pictures and enjoy one of the best sunrises in the world. I spent a good amount of time up here in a quieter and more relaxing setting once the sun had already raised. Just sitting down and seeing the whole Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park landscape was an incredible moment to experience. There are several other official and non official viewpoint areas to enjoy. Many people have said they just go off path a bit and find their own quiet spot away from the crowds which seems like a great option too. #nationalpark#urbanexplorer
