Mahatma Gandhi was the unequivocal father of the nation of India. When he was assassinated in Delhi by a Hindu zealot named Nathuram Godse in January of 1948, the country was orphaned in its infancy – perhaps the most significant moment of its then-brief existence. In memory of the event, the house where Gandhi lived for the last 144 days of his life has been turned into a museum, the spot of his death in the gardens outside marked by a ‘Martyr’s Column’. It’s a small, sober place, but one as good as any to contemplate the Mahatma’s legacy.
