Getting There - You can drive yourself or take a taxi to the entrance hall of the Mogao Grottoes, there you get onto a shuttle bus that takes you to the Grottoes. Attractions - At the entrance Hall of the Mogao Grottoes is a big shop where you can buy souvenirs all inspired from the Grottoes. There's two 'movies' of about 20minutes each about the Mogao Grottoes that they show you, then you move on to the shuttle bus that takes you to the Mogao Grottoes. Each group get a tour guide that show the group 4 different Grottoes, as well as the biggest 'inside' Buddha and reclining Buddha. (You are not allowed to take photos inside the Grottoes) Hotels - There are hotel about 16km from the Grottoes. There's hotels you can choose according to your preference on Trip.com Food & Restaurants - There's restaurants to get food and drinks. I began my trip from Dunhuang centre to visit the grottoes, it was a short trip to the ticket centre. Upon entry I was asked what language I spoke and they gave me an English headset, I thought.. odd. Then I was jostled into a giant cinema, which explained a little of the history of the city, and the silk road. After 10 minutes I was bored and left, I was directed to take another bus, which took around 20 minutes to the grottoes, where I was informed I would not be able to enter without a tour guide. So an English speaking guide joined me and she took me into many of the small caves and caverns in the cliff edge and explained the intricate details of each prayer room and why they were created. This was a major point foe Buddhism spreading from India to China, and is incredibly interesting and a rewarding experience. If I have to pick only one must visit site in China, I will choose Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. It’s the most well-preserved treasure of Buddhism art and history from more than 1,000years ago. There are over 750 caves built from 5th to 14th century, about 500 of them were decorated with murals and sculptures. 60 of them are opened to the public now. An entry ticket includes a visit to 8 random caves with tour guide (in mandarin only during pandemic time).
