I went to Sanjusangendo Temple to buy candy on a clear, sunny day. On this day, there was also a toothpick blessing ceremony, which was open to the public for free. We visited Sanjusangendo. Since photography inside the building is prohibited, we only took photos of the exterior. We also visited the entrance to Kiyomizu-dera Temple (it was lit up) as we were passing by nearby. There was also Kyoto Tower right across from Kyoto Station, so we were able to spend a very productive time during our approximately 3-hour trip. At night, we were able to take beautiful photos of the river along the main street with the lights on, which was very attractive. Recently flew china eastern for a quick weekend getaway. The prices were good and service was surprisingly decent too. There was some delay though. Anyways, kyoto is a beautiful place. One of my favourite cultural stops was sanjusangendo temple. The vast hall houses over 1,000 statues of the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Bodhisattva, recognized as Japanese national treasures. There and hundreds of it the size of normal human decorated neatly in a tiny hall. One of those scenes which you cant find anywhere around the planet. At the middle stands a big big statue. Sanjusangendo (Sanjuu-sangen-do) is a Buddhist temple outside the Myoin Temple of the Tendai sect located in Higashiyama, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. The official name of the building is Rengeouin Main Hall (Rengeouin Hondo). The main deity is the Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara and the founder was Emperor Go-Shirakawa. In 1164, Taira no Kiyomori received an imperial decree from Emperor Go-Shirakawa and built the temple in the Insei-gu and Hoju-ji Temple halls at the foot of Mount Ube (now Amida Peak). It burned down about 80 years later and was rebuilt immediately afterwards. It was rebuilt in 1266.

Officially known as Rengeo-in. It was originally built by Taira no Kiyomori in 1164, during the reign of Emperor Go-Shirakawa, as part of the Hosho-ji Temple complex. Although it was destroyed by fire, the current main hall was rebuilt in 1266. The main hall, which has 33 spaces between its columns, is approximately 125 meters long from north to south and 22 meters wide from east to west. In the center of the hall is a seated statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon crafted by the Kamakura period sculptor Tankei, flanked by 1,000 life-sized standing statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. All the statues inside the hall, including the statues of the Wind God and Thunder God, are designated as National Treasures.
