Taiwan's Lunar Landscape? Step into Tianliao Moon World and feel like you're on another planet.
Did you know? In Kaohsiung, you don't need to travel abroad to experience a desert terrain resembling the surface of the moon.
This is Tianliao Moon World Landscape Park in Kaohsiung—a mysterious and awe-inspiring natural wonder that feels like an alien planet.
When I first stood on the observation deck and looked out, the vast expanse of gray-white badlands appeared like a masterpiece sculpted by nature. No trees, no greenery—just exposed mudstone hills and crisscrossing ravines. It resembles the far side of the moon or the Martian landscapes seen in movies, making you almost forget you're still in Taiwan.
🌑 What is "badland terrain" and why does this place look like the moon?
Tianliao Moon World is one of Taiwan's rare "badland terrains," primarily composed of mudstone. This type of geology, eroded by wind, sun, and rain, cannot support vegetation. The mountain walls continuously collapse and sink, forming sharp ridges and gullies that look as if they were carved by knives. Its resemblance to lunar landscapes earned it the name "Moon World."
Walking through Moon World, you can't help but slow down. The desolation of this land brings a sense of grandeur and tranquility. When the wind blows, all you hear is the sound of the breeze and your footsteps. This solitude feels surreal yet oddly therapeutic.
🚶♀️ Visitor-friendly trails let you admire "out-of-this-world" scenery as you walk
The park's layout is thoughtfully designed, with multiple wooden walkways and trails for visitors. If you get tired, there are pavilions to rest in. The "Observation Platform" and "Moon Pool Trail" are highly recommended for panoramic views of the badlands and postcard-worthy photos.
If you visit in the afternoon or at sunset, sunlight falling on the gray-white ridges creates dynamic shadows, adding depth to the scenery—perfect for photography enthusiasts.
Additionally, the park features simple informational signs explaining how this land rose from the seabed and evolved into today's barren landscape, helping you appreciate this unique natural heritage.
