It is assumed that it was built before the Sukhothai period and has been a royal temple since the beginning because evidence from the Sukhothai stone inscription states that King Sri Naw Nam Thom built the Phra Tooth Relic Sukontha Chedi... The Northern Chronicles state that "Around 1900 B.E., King Sri Thammatrai Pitaka (Phra Maha Thammaracha I) was the king of Sukhothai. He had great faith in Buddhism and studied the Tripitaka and other religious scriptures until he was proficient and experienced. It is difficult to find anyone like him. He built Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat on the eastern bank of the Nan River. There is a prang in the middle, four chapels in each direction, two-tiered galleries, and he ordered three Buddha statues to be molded to be enshrined as the principal Buddha images in all three chapels." Later, in 1915, King Rama VI graciously granted the temple the status of a first-class royal temple, the Woramahawihan type, in 1915. The current full name is Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Woramahawihan.
