Hongya Cave

Hongya Cave, originally known as Hongya Gate, was one of the ancient city gates along the Jialing River in Chongqing. During the Three Kingdoms period, the mountain city was fortified with earthen walls. In the Southern Song Dynasty, during the resistance against the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, the walls were rebuilt with stone. Hongya Gate was originally an open gate, but it was captured by the Yuan general Wang Weican after a fierce battle, taking the Song general. During the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, the city was reconstructed, and the gate was changed to a closed one. Hongya Cave is a large grotto beneath the cliff outside Hongya Gate, also known as the Immortal Cave. It is said that in ancient times, an immortal of Hongya practiced Taoism here.
